Volunteering at Project Suma

We volunteered for Project Suma for one week during March 2023. With limited Spanish, we were worried about how much we could support the brilliant work the team does. We needn’t have been! The team were so welcoming and got us stuck in straight away.

We were supporting the women’s programme with their afternoon sessions. We were involved from the off in throwing some shapes in the therapeutic dance sessions and demonstrating our lack of artistic ability in the nail art class – the women however were amazing on both accounts! We also took part in empowerment classes and bible study. The sessions are so varied to encourage participation from all women though in a very casual and pressure free environment.

We also had the opportunity to go for a street visit in El Alto with the Project Suma team. We were apprehensive and unsure of what to expect but the team are incredibly professional and explained everything ahead of time. It was sensory overload and whilst intimidating, the Project Suma team have a good relationship with the owners and a lot of the women who are pleased to see you there. It really brought home the importance of the work of Project Suma and just how vast the scale of the problem is.

We were thrilled to be able to spend time with the team and learn about the fantastic and life changing work Project Suma does for victims of trafficking.
